A Teaspoon of Nostalgia Helps the Medicine go down
Marty

Foosball was and always will be a wonderful form of entertainment. Played by spinning handles to control your players and hopefully knocking the ball into your opponent’s goal while keeping it out of yours, foosball was an instant classic by the 1930s. But it started to lose steam due to the many other options—technologically advanced as they are—offered up.

Go into those same pubs and same friends’ basements today and what will you find? Billiards table and even electronic air hockey started to replace the classic foosball for a while, and then advancements like the Wii console hit big and everyone had to have one in their game rooms to keep the thirsty travelers entertained. It was hard for foosball to climb out of its respective niche and back into the limelight.

However, this has all been changing recently, and foosball is reemerging as a widely popular game.

Thanks in no small part to raunchy, slapstick comedies that have been released in recent years, college students and other partying types have discovered an assortment of games which they can use to gamble on or simply drink around. Beer pong has recently taken the world by storm, where hands replace paddles and plastic cups of warm, flat beer act like upright goals for scoring fodder. This new generation looks to have their fun with hands-on games, and foosball crept back into the mix.

Once again, in various pubs and basements across the globe, foosball tables are providing solid entertainment. In the college crowd, foosball is even a game that friends are gambling on. And it makes perfect sense; foosball is the ultimate sport for both spectators and players.

Games like foosball often suffer minor setbacks, only to be thrust into the forefront of popular culture once again. It’s like a pair of bellbottoms. In the words of Al Pacino, “Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.” And just as online gambling will never really take the place of the live, classic venue, with its pure ambiance, neither will electronic and technologically advanced games permanently replace foosball. In short, it’s just too fun to give up on.
